Engine cylinders are subjected to extreme stresses. Traditionally, they were equipped with cast or steel cylinder bores, which, however, have several disadvantages – including increased weight, poor heat dissipation, and increased wear. A modern alternative is the Nicasil coating. This nickel-silicon carbide coating offers numerous advantages:
-
Reduced friction : The extremely hard and smooth surface significantly reduces friction, which minimizes wear and increases engine efficiency.
-
Better heat dissipation : Unlike cast iron, the Nicasil coating allows for significantly better heat conduction, keeping the engine cooler and more powerful.
-
Longer service life : The high hardness of Nicasil ensures extreme resistance to wear and thus increases the service life of the cylinder.
-
Weight savings : Compared to cast iron cylinders, Nicasil allows the use of lighter aluminum cylinders, which reduces the overall weight of the engine.
The Nicasil coating is indispensable, especially in racing and for high-performance two-stroke and four-stroke engines. However, over time, even this layer can wear out or become damaged—that's where our professional coating service comes in.
Perfect cylinder coating with Barikit – Highest quality for maximum performance
Overhauling a cylinder is a complex process that requires the utmost precision and considerable manual labor. Every step is carefully performed to ensure optimal durability and performance. Due to the high technical complexity, this service comes at a price – but the investment is worthwhile, as some cylinders are no longer manufactured or have been extensively ported.
A powerful engine requires a flawless cylinder bore. At Barikit, we offer a professional cylinder coating service that meets the highest standards. Our proven process ensures your cylinder is restored to perfect condition – for a long service life and optimal performance.
Our cylinder coating process in detail:
-
Sandblasting the cylinder
First, the cylinder is carefully sandblasted to remove any dirt, deposits, and residue. This ensures that our subsequent acid bath is uncontaminated and that the old coating can be efficiently removed. -
Removal of the old coating
Before a new coating can be applied, the old Nicasil coating must be completely removed. This is done using a special electrochemical removal process that does not damage the basic structure of the cylinder. -
Repair of grooves and tracks
If the cylinder exhibits deep grooves or heavy wear marks, the damaged material is carefully filled using a high-quality welding process. This ensures a stable and consistent base for further processing. -
Precise spindles and grinding
After the material has been welded in, the cylinder is machined to exact dimensions and ground through. This ensures a uniform surface, perfect for applying the new coating. -
Applying the new Nicasil coating
The new Nicasil coating is applied using a complex process. Our coating thickness is 0.07 mm across the radius, making it thicker than many competitors'. This has the advantage of better adhesion and preventing peeling, further increasing the cylinder's durability and reliability. This additional material thickness ensures even longer durability and improved load-bearing capacity of the cylinder. The coating ensures an extremely hard, wear-resistant, and low-friction running surface, ensuring a long service life and high load-bearing capacity. -
Finishing: Honing and deburring
After the coating process, the cylinder is honed to the exact dimensions to achieve perfect roundness and an optimal surface texture. We work with a honing angle of approximately 35°, which has the advantage of optimally retaining the oil in the bore, but also allows for regular oil changes. All edges are then carefully deburred to minimize damage to the piston rings.
Trust Barikit's expertise when it comes to cylinder coating and reconditioning. Our wide range of pistons will complement your engine perfectly.
